Concerned about a child or young person

If you are concerned about the child or young person in your care, there are a number of things you can do:

  • Talk to your child and try to find out what’s upsetting them. Is it school, work, friends? We have lots of information on the child and young person section of this website on the issues which may be affecting them.
  • Talk to their school or college, GP, or health visitor. If you think that they could benefit from an appointment at CAMHS ask them to discuss your child's case with CAMHS and then they can decide if your child need to be referred.
  • If there is an emergency, take the child or young person to the nearest A & E department of the hospital.
  • If you have concerns about specific issues or condition, read our A – Z of conditions to learn more about them and find out where you can go to get help.
  • Visit Surrey Family Links which offers advice and courses to parents
  • Visit YoungMinds, which is a national mental health charity which provides information for parents about mental health issues. It also has a dedicated parents helpline which you can call to talk through any of your worries. Tel: 0808 802 5544.
  • Visit Netmums where you can see a wealth of information or chat to others in a forum.
  • Remember for your child to attend CAMHS they do need to be referred to CAMHS by a professional such as a teacher, school nurse, social worker, GP etc.
